Empowering Lives, Transforming Hearts: Walking Together in Discipleship

Come Follow Me

“Come, Follow Me” is an invitation found in the Bible that originates from Jesus Christ. It’s an urging to follow Him, learn from His teachings, and model one’s life after His example. This phrase encapsulates the essence of discipleship and the call to a life dedicated to following Jesus.

In the New Testament, particularly in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, Jesus repeatedly invites individuals to follow Him. For instance:

  • In Matthew 4:19 (NIV), Jesus said to two fishermen, Simon Peter and Andrew, “Come, follow me, and I will send you out to fish for people.”
  • Matthew 16:24 (NIV) records Jesus saying to His disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.”
  • Mark 2:14 (NIV) notes Jesus calling Levi, a tax collector, to follow Him: “‘Follow me,’ Jesus told him, and Levi got up and followed him.”
  • In John 8:12 (NIV), Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.”

These invitations emphasize the core of discipleship: abandoning one’s former ways to follow Jesus, learning from His teachings, and shaping one’s life according to His principles of love, mercy, justice, and compassion.

“Come, Follow Me” encapsulates the notion that Jesus is the ultimate example to emulate and that discipleship involves a continuous journey of learning, growth, and adherence to His teachings.

In contemporary Christianity, “Come, Follow Me” is countercultural, just the way Jesus intended his invitation to the first disciples. It emphasizes the idea of living in alignment with Christ’s teachings and example.
